{"id":2987,"date":"2020-04-19T20:05:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-19T20:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.system11.org\/?p=2987"},"modified":"2020-04-19T20:20:40","modified_gmt":"2020-04-19T20:20:40","slug":"1972-tony-coin-op-mahjong-bartop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/?p=2987","title":{"rendered":"1972 TONY coin-op Mahjong bartop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was browsing Yahoo auctions recently looking for Mahjong control panels and an IMAX MJ adapter loom, when I came across an unusual little bartop machine, the &#8220;TONY&#8221;.\u00a0 The description stated that they&#8217;d plugged it in and nothing happened, but they had not put a coin in.\u00a0 I&#8217;m a sucker for old weird gaming tech so it ticked all the boxes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2969\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1140\" height=\"1281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1-911x1024.jpg 911w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj1-768x863.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1140px) 100vw, 1140px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So what on earth is it?\u00a0 After quite a bit of research as well as pulling the machine apart to fix it, this is a coin operated timer with an off the shelf TOMY Mahjong toy with a hole drilled in the battery cover to run power in.\u00a0 You get a little under 5 minutes of play for 100 yen and the idea is to just try to come up with a winning hand.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t do anything when you manage it, it&#8217;s just a toy.\u00a0 And yes they really did take a TOMY toy and sell it as a coin operated TONY.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2970\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1760\" height=\"986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2.jpg 1760w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2-768x430.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj2-1536x861.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1760px) 100vw, 1760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I need to try to translate these, but you can tell how old it is from the fading on the instructions &#8211; method which was useless, and then picking each pin by hand.\u00a0 A few minutes later &#8211; success!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2973\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1423\" height=\"1182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5.jpg 1423w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5-1024x851.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj5-768x638.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1423px) 100vw, 1423px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This photo was actually taken after I&#8217;d fixed everything although I&#8217;m waiting for some rubber insulated bullet connectors to replace the ugly terminal block.\u00a0 Blue tape was just so I didn&#8217;t get the wires mixed up, they&#8217;re ink marked now.\u00a0 As you can see the coin box is actually a small velcro closing bag, I found 100 yen in there so I don&#8217;t know if the story about not testing it was true or not.\u00a0 Pay close attention to the positioning of the transformer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2977\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9-280x300.jpg 280w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9-956x1024.jpg 956w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj9-768x822.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s time to explain why pushing coins in and just powering it up were simultaneously bad ideas.\u00a0 Firstly the power flex had many tiny chunks missing from the insulation, I hadn&#8217;t noticed because I stupidly didn&#8217;t check &#8211; these were exposing mains wire.\u00a0 Secondly, the transformer is held in with one nut and braces against the side using adhesive foam.\u00a0 I had to jury rig a replacement for that as a shop sold me single sided instead of double sided, but that foam is the only thing stopping the transformer case from touching the metal body, which is not grounded.\u00a0 Also notice the transformer body is PART OF THE LIVE PATH, the voltage goes to the mounting bolt\/nut, through the body and a wire runs from that to the transformer input.\u00a0 I have no idea why this isn&#8217;t just a wire from the bolt to begin with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2978\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1219\" height=\"1268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10.jpg 1219w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10-984x1024.jpg 984w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj10-768x799.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1219px) 100vw, 1219px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And onto the final item of danger &#8211; the timer works when a coin is put in, and the timing is based on how long it takes for a very low geared motor to turn a metal disc.\u00a0 A post on the disc pushes the coin release which drops the coin into the bag and then continues to spin until the post on the disc has disengaged from the coin release.\u00a0 Uses a switch right?\u00a0 No, the 100 yen coin acts as a conductor across the coin mechanism, it is the live voltage path to the motor.\u00a0 The reason the motor still runs afterwards is a sprung voltage feed touching the disc and therefore the coin release, keeps feeding the motor until the post disengages.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a very good description, sorry.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean?\u00a0 Nearly every metal surface is live.\u00a0 The bolts are mostly live, the transformer casing is live, the actuating disc is live and even the coin has 100v across it.\u00a0 If a coin is in there and you pile another 3 on top so that one is poking out of the coin slot, that&#8217;s a good way to touch a 100v mains feed.\u00a0 Safety standards in the 70s were not what they are now.\u00a0 On to the repairs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2979\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11-1024x925.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj11-768x694.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the timing system did actually still work, you can see a fairly obvious problem, and when I was repairing it I found this likely broke when it was assembled &#8211; it&#8217;s a set of 5 gears dropping the ratio, with the smallest ones in brass to avoid breakage.\u00a0 The big gear it drives is attached to a clear plastic part molded to the drive shaft splines.\u00a0 It&#8217;s cracked with age but still strong &amp; superglue on some plastics can result in a somewhat weak join even if it&#8217;s the best option available.\u00a0 Step 1 scuff up the plastic and file down the glue edge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2985\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj17.jpg 850w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj17-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj17-768x525.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Step 2 cut a piece of something stronger, scuff up the surface and use a light film of epoxy adhesive, then cover it including the edges.\u00a0 This will never snap again.\u00a0 Not pictured but I also did a few other spot repairs around cracks, this was the one needing a brace though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2986\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"882\" height=\"658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj18.jpg 882w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj18-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/tony_mj18-768x573.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So with that the entire coin operated part was fixed, but the Mahjong toy was still broken despite good 1.5v coming from the transformer.\u00a0 Repairs not shown but here&#8217;s the full set of dismantled parts.\u00a0 One ratchet was snapped, both small motor mounts were snapped, the lower case was cracked, both drum drive gears had cracked with age (initially I thought it had been reverse wired and broke itself but I&#8217;ve discounted that theory now).\u00a0 All basic fixes although the drive gears can&#8217;t really be repaired or sourced, the trick there is a small amount of thread lock on the axle.\u00a0 The motor was working but only if gently encouraged.\u00a0 Both button contacts needed cleaning and dropping some 3-in-1 oil onto both axle ends of the motor freed it up, then topped up with a droplet of sewing machine oil to smooth it out as it was running &#8216;loose&#8217; the nicotine (which took an age to remove from the clear plastic cover and the TONY badge) wouldn&#8217;t shift without aggressive cleaners that also looked like they&#8217;d strip out the paint from the fake woodgrain.\u00a0 The badge was in a total state when I got it, bent &amp;
