chewing &#038; bad reads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been dumping a lot of cassette media lately, and I&#8217;ve seen this problem enough to consider it a common fault.\u00a0 On standard computer cassette tapes there is a piece of foam which acts like a tensioner pressing the tape against the read head.\u00a0 There are two main designs for these, you can see them looking at the bottom of a tape.\u00a0 This is the most common type, the foam is on a spring metal strip:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3021\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1853\" height=\"544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2.jpg 1853w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2-1024x301.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2-768x225.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam2-1536x451.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1853px) 100vw, 1853px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this is the less common and highly problematic type, a thicker piece of foam is stuck to the metal &#8216;mirror&#8217; or even total collapse.\u00a0 This causes two main problems &#8211; firstly since the tape is not being held against the head as it should be, the signal quality on reads will be degraded, especially if the tape has become slightly wavy.\u00a0 Secondly and as a direct result of this, if the tape isn&#8217;t held on the head properly the whole tape path becomes less secure which can lead to positioning problems and very quickly you&#8217;ll start to hear that horrible crunching sound as the tape starts to slip out of position and get dragged through the mechanism folding over on itself.\u00a0 This is exactly what happened to House Of Usher by the way&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the problem with the foam itself, I put the slightest amount of sideways pressure on the top one despite it looking in good condition.\u00a0 I just brushed it with a bit of paper, it came apart immediately.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3027\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1154\" height=\"866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8.jpg 1154w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam8-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1154px) 100vw, 1154px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When you get a tape using this mirror-foam arrangement, you&#8217;re going to have to replace that foam before you try using it &#8211; this is sometimes found on ebay and the job is simple enough to explain &#8211; scrape it off, stick the new bit on &#8211; done.\u00a0 However there&#8217;s a far better solution for the first (smaller) type.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a photo of the Salvage tape with the hardware removed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3028\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1219\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9.jpg 1219w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9-1024x423.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.system11.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tape_badfoam9-768x318.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1219px) 100vw, 1219px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this design you&#8217;re stuck &#8211; actually to dump this tape I removed the reels and temporarily put them in a different type of case with the spring bar foam.\u00a0 Instant perfect read from both sides&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>However the House Of Usher tape is actually the exact same design as more common tapes, just the mirror-foam is replaced with the spring-foam design &#8211;
