Byzantium (2012)
Excellent if flawed vampire film starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan, there’s some strong bloody violence, but the film is at its most effective during some of the dialogue pieces, particularly the ones between the mother, the child, and the school teachers. Saoirse is definitely on my ‘actresses to watch’ list, she stole the show in this film even against an alluring performance from Gemma, and was similarly good in Hanna which you need to check out if you haven’t already.
The flawed aspects are the historical throwbacks, some parts of it are fine but some feel tacked on, as if they could have just spent more time in the present more productively. I caught this one on my on-demand service, but it’s just gone straight on my Amazon wishlist.
