Hummingbird (2013)
It’s another Jason Statham action movie! You’ll probably have made up your mind already on whether you like his films or not, I’m 50/50 – some have been good and some have been distinctly uninspiring.
In Hummingbird Jason plays a down and out called Joe, who is living rough with a friend having deserted the army. He’s a mess, a vulnerable alcoholic who ends up hiding out in the flat of a wealthy Londoner after having escaped into it when the Soho homeless are being shaken down for change and drugs by some local crooks.
Presented with a roof over his head since the owner is away travelling, he tries to get his life back on track – but ends up being hired as muscle by the local Chinese mafia, and then his friend from the streets is found dead after a client turns violent. You can guess the end result from here.
The film is violent in places, but it doesn’t feel gratuitous and it’s surprisingly sensitive with the portrayal of Joe and sister Cristina. It’s also a slow burner, which makes a nice change from the films Jason normally stars in, he’s given a chance to act for once.
Definitely a cut above the normal action/revenge film, it had me gripped from start to finish and it’s well worth checking out unless you really don’t like Statham at all.
