Space Battleship Yamato (2010)
Not sure how this slipped past my radar for so long. Being a fan of Yamato (or Star Blazers as it was called in the US), I was surprised to find someone had made a live action version. The plot has been changed just slightly, other than that the story follows the near extinction of the human race, and the trip to Iskandar. The visual effects aren’t bad, it’s a shame we don’t get to see more of the Yamato in battles, because it looks awesome in those scenes. The script is very hammy, and the over-acting is in places hilarious. What I can’t work out is whether or not it was on purpose, it did make it feel like watching the anime after all. Overall, worth catching if you’ve ever liked the Yamato series, but it’s definitely on the pricey side for the BR disc.
Texas Chainsaw (2013)
Another sequel to one of the greatest horror films of all time, and unlike one or two of the actual remakes, it’s not offensively bad. An acceptable number of people die, Leatherface is scary and the lead actress is easy to look at. Really the only problem I had with the film (and I’m a real pro at suspending disbelief), is how the lead character later in the film seems to just forget what happened to all her friends. Actually there were a couple of annoying ‘OMG 3D’ shots too, I do wish companies would grow out of that. It was solid though, definitely delivered.
